Chapter Sixteen

EVONNA WALKED AWAY FROM Alaistar with a seething maelstrom of contradictory emotions ravaging her heart and soul.

Confusion didn't even begin to cover the complicated, conflicting litany of thoughts and feelings that swirled through her mind like a gathering storm.

Nothing made sense to her anymore.

Especially not Alaistar.

He was the notorious Frog Prince.

Imperious.

Cold.

Impossibly arrogant.

But Evonna had also seen the flashes of warmth and compassion that slipped through his icy exterior every time they were together.

Yet, as much as she wanted to believe that was the real Alaistar, it was impossible to forget he was also the man who'd kept her brother locked up for years. The very same man who took such a hard line on the rules and the laws of Darkhar had bent them enough to let her see Bevan.

Because he understood exactly how she felt. No matter how much he'd tried to hide, his own worry and fears became stark and clear as he'd talked about his own sister.

Despite that, her brother remained locked in that prison. Condemned to an existence in limbo.

Alive.

But not really living.

A choked sound escaped Evonna's throat as she fought to hold back the tears.

It had been overwhelming to see her brother in chains. To watch him manhandled by guards. To know he was stuck in that lightless, joyless place.

The fury and the grief had walked hand in hand with Evonna as she was forced to leave, not knowing if she'd ever see Bevan again.

Then she'd stepped out of the heavy, confining doors and spotted Alaistar. All of her anger and ferocity immediately latched on to him.

A more cautious part of her mind knew tearing into the ruthless Frog Prince was dangerous and foolish. That she could easily end up in a cell next to her brother.

Or worse.

Yet, despite Alaistar's fearsome reputation and unnatural appearance, Evonna felt safe with him.

The shocking thought stopped her in her tracks, and hysterical laughter swept through her. The laughter quickly turned to tears as her body shook with the aftermath of the confrontation.

Or, perhaps, the weakness and nausea that left her trembling was another manifestation of the poisoned magic. A harsh reminder of the foolhardy bargain she'd made. And that her time was running short.

Alaistar made her feel safe.

And he had no idea how much of a danger Evonna was to him.

Her knees finally giving out, Evonna dropped to the sand. Only now noticing that her heedless flight had once more brought her to the secluded cove.

Smuggler's Ruin.

Such an apt name.

Evonna pulled the dagger from its hiding place beneath her vest and considered her own ruin.

The goldwork was beautiful. As was the carefully engraved crest on the pommel.

Combined with the special magic that kept the blade eternally sharp, the weapon was worth a small fortune.

"They'll be lining up to stick a knife between my ribs as soon as the first crack of vulnerability is revealed."

He'd uttered the words so easily. Casually accepting that possible fate as simple fact.

All without knowing that exact possibility stood only inches away, concealed beneath layers of linen and leather.
